Your title makes you a manager, your people make you a leader

Bill Campbell was a technology business executive, board director at Apple and coach to a multitude of leaders at some of the most successful companies to emerge out of Silicon Valley, including Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Eric Schmidt at Google, Steve Jobs at Apple and Sheryl Sandberg at Facebook. After Campbell passed away in 2016, Schmidt, Jonathan Rosenberg and Alan Eagle (all from Google) wrote Trillion Dollar Coach to share what they learned from Campbell’s unique approach to leadership, an approach that, as the title alludes, is informed by his experience as a college football coach. Campbell was not a technologist but he recognized that to be successful in a fast-moving, technology-driven business world, a leader must build quality relationships, establish trust, and enable teams to act collectively in the best interests of the company. That’s what coaches do. At it’s core, this book is a leadership book. Some of my takeways are as follows:

  • the fates of our careers and our companies hinge on the quality of our relationships
  • To be a great manager you have to be a great coach. after all, the higher you climb, the more your success depends on making other people successful.
  • The path to success in a fast-moving, technology-driven business world is to firm high-performing teams and give them the resources and freedom to do great things.
  • The primary job of a manager is to help people be more effective in their job and to grow and develop. Support means giving people all the tools information training and coaching they need to succeed. it means continuous effort to develop people skills great managers help people excel and grow.
  • Humility is key, leadership is not about you, it’s about service to something bigger: the company, the team
