The Making of a Manager: What to Do When Everyone Looks to You is a book by Julie Zhuo that provides insight into the transition from individual contributor to manager, offering advice on leadership, team-building, and effective management. Zhuo draws on her experience as an early employee at Facebook to guide new managers through the challenges of their role, emphasizing the importance of communication, motivation, and creating a strong team culture. I thought this book had some nuggets of real wisdom, but for me it wasn’t organized in a way that made it particularly memorable. A bunch of good quotes and concepts were taken from other (better) books like High Output Management by Andrew Grove, Laszlo Bock’s Work Rules! and Kim Scott‘s Radical Candor. If you’re interested in hearing a new voice retell the journey of developing as a manager at a ridiculously fast-growing start up, then check out Zhuo’s book. If you’re looking to learn fundamental concepts of management and leadership, there are better optoins.
