Shadow Divers

--

Part Jon Krakauer, part Stephen E. Ambrose, Robert Kurson’s Shadow Divers is a gripping account of the 1991 discovery of a World War II U-Boat 60 miles off the coast of New Jersey. A team lead by deep sea divers John Chatterton and Richie Kohler worked for nearly a decade to uncover the identity of the U-Boat and ascertain evidence of how it sank. The book vividly details the challenges and the dangers of diving at a depth of 230 feet — sadly, three divers lost their lives diving the wreck. The book also offers a hearth-wrenching retelling of the lives of the sailors that were lost aboard U-869 and how Kohler and Chatterton sought to explore the wreckage with great sensitivity both the historical significance but the human stories that remained in the depths of the Atlantic.
