One good tool is rarely enough in a complex, interconnected, rapidly changing world.

Range by David Epstein challenges the conventional wisdom that early specialization is the only path to success. Through a wide array of examples from sports, science, and business, Epstein argues that individuals with broad experiences and diverse skills — generalists — are often more creative, more agile, and able to make connections their more specialized peers might miss, leading to groundbreaking innovations and achievements. The book makes a compelling case for cultivating a wide range of interests and skills, even in a world that increasingly values specialization, showing that those with range are better equipped to adapt and excel in complex and changing environments. This idea has implications for me personally as a father with two boys who play sports and participate in increasingly specialized and time-demanding activities. It underscores the power of “breadth, diverse experience, and interdisciplinary exploration” in finding who you are as a kid or even as an adult.
