Ego Is the Enemy
Ego Is the Enemy is about building awareness of the negative effects of our ambition. According to Holiday, “precisely what drives us to the top makes us vulnerable to the darker side of the psyche.” That darker side is ego. Ego will stand in the way of truly being successful and living a full life. I took this to heart. I know firsthand that when you are a leader, you have to sell yourself — you constantly hear yourself talk and its easy to start to believe your own bullshit. The isolation we’ve experienced in the past two years can only exacerbate this effect as it’s so easy to live in your own head when you are working remotely. Instead, we must maintain humility, diligence and self-awareness. We must dedicate ourselves to being a lifelong student. We should learn to be silent and listen to others (“Void is terrifying to most people” — Marlon Brando). Don’t have passion. Instead have purpose and reason. This will enable us to approach new challenges with clarity, deliberateness and methodical determination. The outside world is not preventing you from having a successful life, nor is it the measure of one. The impediment is within.
